"I always learned more in a participation class. I want Kitchen Friends to be a place where cooking class is fun, in a place that feels right at home."
– Chef Karel Anne Tieszen
arel Anne Tieszen (Chef KAT) united her longstanding involvement with the food service industry with her ability to teach and created her highly successful Kitchen Friends Cooking School. Fueled by her passion to feed the heart of homes, Kitchen Friends has provided hands-on participatory cooking classes in Chef KAT’s large suburban home kitchen for more than nine years. Students are encouraged to learn and experiment with new techniques and flavors. The class, which is usually 12 or more cooks, sits around the table at the end to taste and critique the meal.
The classes emphasize realistic food preparation for ‘regular’ people who appreciate a good meal that is slightly off the beaten path. As a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, she offers real-life experience in what adults want to learn.
Most recently, Chef KAT created a new cookbook for home cooks who want to be a bit more daring without the risk of disaster. In Your Own Kitchen: Reality Cooking at Home sharesChef KAT’s signature dishes in this sumptuous feast for the eyes. With sidebars that walk the cook step-by-step through any ‘What if’ scenarios, it is just like having Chef KAT right there. Incredibly, most recipes have seven steps or less.
Her studies in the culinary arts have included a summer program at Anne Willan's La Varenne Cooking School in France; a short term apprenticeship at Troisgros, a legendary three Michelin star restaurant in Roanne, France located just outside Lyon; and over 20 years of taking cooking classes from local Dallas-Ft Worth instructors including Stephan Pyles, Tina Wasserman and Renie Steves. Most recently she was invited to be a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier a leadership culinary organization composed of women who have not only achieved success in their profession, but who contribute significantly to their communities.
International travels whet her appetite for a serving platter of culinary adventure. She lived in a Paris suburb for a year beginning in 2002, cooking, dining and learning. She returns to Europe often, and loves it.
Her commitment to giving back to her community is clear. She has assisted in events for Share Our Strength, Taste of the Nation, the North Texas Food Bank, and many others. She is an active member of Dallas Social Venture Partnership. Also, she has been a part of the Texas State Fair Celebrity Chef Kitchen since 2000.
Chef KAT currently feeds the heart of her home in Duncanville, Texas with her two children, Aaron and Ambra.
